Wikipedia All-Stars: Ron Artest III

Who knew that any one individual could provide so much content of interest? I would like to propose an official petition to have the actor who plays the most interesting man in the world to be changed to Ron Artest.

This third installment is dedicated to his most recent actions. See the screenshot below for more details:

It is nearly official. Ron Artest is changing his name to Metta World Peace. This seems very similar to Lloyd Bernard Free, who in 1981 changed his name to World B. Free. The only difference: Ron Artest is supremely cooler.

Wikipedia All-Stars: Ron Artest II

Time to revisit wikipedia, and this time we will also be revisiting Ron Artest, one of my favorite basketball players.  Last time I posted about Ron, it was about how he once saw a man get stabbed in the heart with a broken table leg during a game of street ball.  The amazing tale of Ron Artest does not end there however:

Artest has been a subject of frequent controversy. In a December 2009 interview, Artest admitted that he had led a “wild” lifestyle as a young player, and that he drank Hennessy in the locker room at halftime when he was playing for the Chicago Bulls at the beginning of his NBA career. During his rookie season in Chicago, he was criticized for applying for a job at Circuit City in order to get an employee discount.  He once attended a practice with the Indiana Pacers in a bath robe.

Some call that kind of behavior inappropriate, I call it the american dream.  Who doesn’t want to do EVERYTHING in a bathrobe?  But my favorite is the fact that he tried to get a job at Circuit City for the discount.  First of all, I don’t think any professional athlete needs to worry about money (except for the WNBA).  Second, why not just let him work there during the offseason?  Who is that going to hurt?  If anything he was just being frugal.  And yet people still think he’s the crazy one…

Wikipedia All-Stars: Ron Artest

For anyone who doesn’t know, Ron Artest plays basketball for the Lakers. His career/life highlights include winning an NBA championship, recording maybe the worst greatest rap album of all time, and chasing down a fan and punching him in the face giving him a high five. He is known for playing a rough style of basketball, and this might offer a small clue to where he learned it:

“Growing up in a rough neighborhood Artest claims he witnessed the murder of a fellow player on a basketball court. “It was so competitive, they broke a leg from a table and they threw it, it went right through his heart and he died right on the court. So I’m accustomed to playing basketball really rough.”

Well that makes sense. Not to self: Never play basketball with Ron Artest. Or in his neighborhood. Or near a broken table. Or with ANYONE capable of throwing ANYTHING through another person heart.

Wikipedia All-Stars: Keratoconus

Today’s search of Wikipedia is inspired by events that will unfold in less than 24 hours. In roughly 17 hours I will become the first person in the state of Utah to undergo a rather new eye procedure. The procedure is a new treatment of the disease Keratoconus. Here are a few excerpts of what wikipedia has to say about the disease:

Keratoconus (from Greek: kerato- horn, cornea; and konos cone), is a degenerative disorder of the eye in which structural changes within the cornea cause it to thin and change to a more conical shape than its normal gradual curve.

Keratoconus affects around one person in a thousand. It seems to occur in populations throughout the world, although it occurs more frequently in certain ethnic groups such as South Asians. The exact cause of keratoconus is uncertain, but has been associated with detrimental enzyme activity within the cornea. Environmental and genetic factors are considered possible causes, but the findings are still yet inconclusive. The progression of keratoconus is rapid in patients having Down syndrome.

According to this, I suppose statistically speaking, I am a South Asian with Down Syndrome. We all know this isn’t true though…anyone who knows me knows I am not Asian.

Wikipedia All-Stars: Jicama

Jicama is a root type vegetable found throughout the world. Here is a little factoid I learned on wiki that I would like to share with everyone:

In contrast to the root, the remainder of the jícama plant is very poisonous; the seeds contain the toxin rotenone, which is used to poison insects and fish.
I found that interesting. This wasn’t supposed to funny, but rather educational. No one can ever say they don’t learn anything from my blog.

Wikipedia All-Stars: Mr.T

Ok time for a real wikipedia all star. Everyone knows who Mr.T is, but in case your grew up under a rock and this is your first day in the real world and had the misfortune of someone showing you my blog, Mr.T is this guy:

Impressive I know. Whats even MORE impressive is the following information pulled from his wiki page:

In 1984, he made a motivational video called Be Somebody… or Be Somebody’s Fool!. He gives helpful advice to children throughout the video; for example, he teaches them how to understand and appreciate their origins, how to dress fashionably without buying designer labels, how to make tripping up look like breakdancing, how to control their anger, and how to deal with peer pressure. The video is roughly one hour long, but contains 30 minutes of singing, either by the group of children accompanying him, or by Mr. T himself. He sings “Treat Your Mother Right (Treat Her Right),” in which he enumerates the reasons why it is important to treat your mother right, and also raps a song about growing up in the ghetto and praising God. The raps in this video were written by Ice T.
Add this to my bucket list: WATCH BE SOMEDODY…OR BE SOMEBODY’S FOOL!! All of those things he teaches are the things I struggle with everyday. Especially the breakdancing one. My birthday is next month, so if anyone needed a hint of what to get me…this is pretty much all I would need for the rest of my life. Also, some Swedish Fish would be great.

p.s.- I would also suggest checking out the wealth of information found in the ‘Personal Life’ section of Mr Ts wikipedia page. Spoiler alert: its only 6 words long.
